Many of our students have "govt issued phones" with limited data, access, capability, etc. Are you encountering similar challenges of phone capabilty and ho w are you helping these students?
HI everyone from New Mexico Coalition for Literacy
Hi Jackie, If the students have unlimited texting in their plan, they can use Cell-Ed. We have used Cell-Ed for several years and can vouch for its effectiveness. They even have live coaches.
Do you have a sample role description for these volunteers that you're using to onboard and check in with students?

I don't know if this is the same question that Meredith was asking: Is it possible to see your script for volunteers?
Can you expand on the topic. Provide structure to enhance volunteer success
Hi Jessica! Cell Ed has been awesome. It has been a great help for our ESL and low level literacy students.
LCNV would be happy to share our script for volunteers!
Thank you very much, Melissa!
Hi Jackie! I hope you and team at Eastside are doing ok under these challenging times. We have new program options for you, Houston and more.
Thank you, Xavier, for your excellent presentation!

Xavier, What community organizations are you partnering with as part of the team approach in using volunteers?
English Now! Implementation Guide & Scale-Up Webinar --https://edtech.worlded.org/resources/english-now-implementation-guide-scale-up-webinar/
Xavier, Is the onboarding always done 1:1 or do you use small groups with WhatsApp for example?
Will a recording of this webinar be available after today?
Yes we will be sharing the recording and presentation slides, plus any additional resources
Sherry, for our students who are not in an online class, yes, we've been doing everything 1:1.
@Sherry, for onboarding students onto mobile learning apps, we're trying to do it 1:1 to make it as flexible as possible time-wise for students. To be sure, this means that it takes a lot of time to reach all of the students. For onboarding students to Zoom/WhatsApp classes, many of our teachers have found it effective to work with students 1:1 first before bringing groups of students together on those platforms. It's helped students feel more confident and comfortable with the platform before jumping back into "class". Failing that, teachers/staff try to work with students 1:1 after class to work out any technical issues.
Thank you, Kathleen!
Hi Sherry, LCNV has partnered with some local community volunteer organizations, namely Volunteer Alexandria and Volunteer Fairfax. We've also leveraged our partnerships with other nonprofit and community organizations, especially to locate bilingual volunteers.
Is a "feature phone" a non-smartphone? I haven't heard this term before.
@Xavier and team: Thank you!
Yes, Meredith that’s correct
Yes, non-smartphone. Cell-Ed uses phone for listening and text for viewing and responding.
Cell-Ed is great about taking in feedback and enhancing their tools and services even further! I think the WhatsApp integration is very exciting.
Working with Jessica and Cell Ed is great. Looking forward to doing more
the slide said to call to sign up for the 1 M challenge access to Cell Ed....what's the number a student would call?
Found it :)
If students sign up as part of the challenge, can we link them to our program so we can track their time for federal reporting?
@Jess can you share more about the new languages that will be added?
Re: onboarding remotely, here's a webpage LCNV made using Wakelet to combine text and video instructions on how to sign up for USA Learns - https://wke.lt/w/s/T2XUTl.We've been using screencasting tools (e.g., Screencast-O-Matic and Screencastify) to make videos for volunteers and students to explain about mLearning options and walk through the sign-up process - (e.g., for USA Learns - https://youtu.be/23RLvPfIUv4?t=135)We hope to have more videos for Learning Upgrade and Cell-Ed soon.
Excellent presentation and resources - thanks.
Thank you, Jessica! Exciting initiative.
I would love to hear more about push texts — are those one-way?
Very generous! Thank you, Cell-Ed!
The capacity is amazing - languages, courses, personal support!
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much
Thank you, everyone!
I'll definitely share with practitioners in our PD.
