My volunteer threaten to quit when I asked them to do anything with a computer (even emaill!) How did you convince yours?
Ruth Rodriguez
41:19
Tell them they can do phone tutoring!
Diana Rangl
42:54
I felt like doing that myself , haha
Xavier Munoz
43:15
@Vilvi, I second what Ruth said about phone tutoring. We've found a lot of success inviting volunteers who are on the fence to observe/sit in on a class led by a teacher who's now gotten some experience teaching online. Not everyone is interested after seeing a class, but many are reassured that it's possible.
Ruth Rodriguez
45:48
I think what he says about start with what they're familiar with is really important
Jen Vanek
46:19
Thanks, Ruth! Chime in with more strategies that have worked for you.

48:33
Slow and steady is so key. And the starting point wasn't just March; it starts again with each new volunteer.

More questions for Todd?
Asma Mohamed
54:18
Im an elementary school teacher. My sessions are 40 minutes .How to keep my students engaged and interactive throughout the session.
Xavier Munoz
55:11
Question for Todd - for volunteer programs looking to get additional funding (whether to stay afloat during these times or to expand into new programming/services), do you know of any national/general grants out there? Or insights into what types of grants are popping up these days?
Xavier Munoz
57:59
Thanks, Todd.

Asma, regarding keeping students engaged for 40 minutes, our tutors have found that really they're using the same strategies that they would use in a face to face class. They are reading things that are on screen and taking turns reading out loud. The tutor is posing questions and asking students to respond, either orally or in the chat. The one difference is that a lot of tutors are using sites like Kahoots and Quizlet to create short Quiz/Game activities to review content. The students really like these.

Literacy Minnesota Webinars -- https://www.literacymn.org/volunteer-trainings?training-type=905
Todd Evans
01:11:31
Rob, those are open to anyone?
Eliana Stanislawski
01:11:44
will recordings of these trainings be made available?
Xavier Munoz
01:11:52
The Literacy Minnesota webinars have been amazing. Immediately relevant and very well facilitated. I regularly recommend them to our teachers, class aides, and tutors.
Eliana Stanislawski
01:12:22
could materials from them be made public/shared over email?
Eliana Stanislawski
01:12:40
if you don’t attend the webinar can you still get access to those materials?
Claire Balani
01:12:58
Could we request certain materials? I wasnt able to attend the trainings on trauma informed teaching
Jen Vanek
01:13:12
Anyone under 25 is asking “What is that?!”
Jen Vanek
01:14:06
Claire - I think that’s an upcoming webinar.
Jen Vanek
01:15:09
Check out our session featuring Rachel Riggs - who offered some interesting strategies to control background noise in Zoom meetings

Emma Wilson
01:18:37
What is the ration of volunteer/tutor to students?
Rachel Riggs
01:20:23
That will be very helpful!
Eliana Stanislawski
01:20:32
i would also like that video! how do i sign up to receive it?
Ruth Rodriguez
01:20:42
I tried to do that work-around, but you can't use more that one phone number any more with whatsapp
Ruth Rodriguez
01:21:10
I already had WhatsApp on my phone, so wasn't able to set it up with another phone number
Todd Evans
01:21:26
A lot of the programs we talked to were using Google Voice. Also, a lot were using Remind to communicate with tutors and students, which is a subscription but doesn't share phone numbers.
Victoria Neff
01:21:44
The only way that I know is if you have access to the WhatsApp API -- typically businesses use this to communicate with customers, etc.
Victoria Neff
01:21:53
Wish there was a way to make this feature more accessible!
Linda Beliveau
01:22:18
Are volunteers able to share their screens with volunteers?
Xavier Munoz
01:22:30
@Emma re: ratio, when we place volunteer teachers and class aides into classes on Zoom, we've been trying to place one teacher with one class aide when the class gets up to 10 students. If the online class is 10-15, we converse with the teacher about possibly placing a second class aide. However, it really varies depending on the teacher and the student attendance whether it makes sense for a class aide to be scheduled regularly or just as needed. Some teachers do great with several class aides even if it's 1:1 in class. We have a few classes that are conducted via WhatsApp video call. These are for literacy learners, so we're keeping it to 3 students at a time with 1 teacher.
