Hello from NYC

31:28
Joselyn’s center is in Massachusetts

33:08
Please everyone - chat questions for Joselyn

33:57
We had to check to see which agencies were still operating

37:13
Lawrence, MA

37:33
Did teachers use these tools before COVID-19 closures?

38:38
I didn't use any tech before. My classroom I had was devoid of current tech.

40:23
Are you able to teach students online forms required by the different agencies?

41:27
Hi Jocelyn:

41:35
Are you able to bring in "guest speakers" from different agencies who can provide information virtually (not just send documents)

41:54
We've heard that some students are confused by the difference between stimulus and unemployment checks. Have you deal with this?

42:36
Have you been able to work with incarcerated students?

42:42
Have you found that students are not able to pay for their housing?

43:59
I think this is also a lot of new vocabulary specific to task which is what I was getting into before we were all shut down.

44:40
Can you speak more about the balance between supporting connection/checking in and not overwhelming students. What guidance do you give to teachers?

45:51
Google classroom is difficult for students. It's hard to help the students navigate even when they do speak English.

46:11
How much do I wish that there was a way to hide phone numbers in WhatsApp in a group. It’s my preference but due to privacy issues can’t use.

47:02
You can get a Google voice phone number. I have one. You use your personal google account!

47:06
You could use Google Voice for privacy and text students

47:44
Google voice works for phone calls but not text. If you text, it shows your real number.

47:44
For myself that works but students can see other students phone numbers

48:04
It prompts you through step by step. It was very easy. Students can text me and leave voice mail just like normal.

48:29
Can you share the housing resources?

52:04
Thank you Joselyn!

52:16
I don't know how you would remedy that with that app for the students as well. I don't have to worry about that with the Google classroom because the "classroom stream" is like facebook where they can communicate freely without phone numbers.

52:40
Thanks Joselyn!

53:04
You are welcome

53:25
I was wondering about Google Meets/Hangouts. Is there a way we can sign on?

54:25
I use Google Meet. It's useful.

54:34
cell-ed.org

54:38
It's like Zoom.

55:29
is Google Meet free?

55:40
YES

56:08
We use meet too. It’s great because most students have a google account. I don’t think you can use individual chat like with zoom. With Microsoft teams, you can pause the live video feed.

56:36
Please chat your questions to Jessica. What do you want to know about Cell-Eds coaching and text enabled learning?

57:29
I don't think I can start a Google meet then go individual. I can block a student for being inappropriate.

59:28
Can you talk about how you make information accessible for students at "zero level" (no English; no first language literacy"

59:38
I have been using the Chat with my students. I am teaching them how to chat in Zoom. I do teach HiSET/GED level students though but I think if you teach even the literacy level, you can do it. Their children and grandchildren can be a great resource for assisting our adult learners with navigating the individual chat.

Thanks for the wesite!

01:01:31
Can you talk about how Cell Ed is evidence-based? How you know effective learning is happening for students who use it?

01:02:09
Do learners need an account code to get into the COVID courses?

01:02:19
Can Cell-Ed users talk with a coach by phone? If so, how does that work? Are there office hours?

01:05:18
Can you tell us how much the licenses are for a class or for individuals?

01:06:05
Can you tell us about what work-contextualized English language learning Cell-Ed offers now or plans to offer?

01:06:33
Jessica, has Cell-Ed been used in family literacy context? With parents and children? Can you speak more about about that?

01:07:23
I worked with my 5 year old grandson the other day and now whenever I FaceTime my daughter and him, he asks if we can work on our letters. My daughter texted me that I made it interactive and fun for him. We should be able to do similar lessons with our literacy students for advising as well as teaching them.

01:07:38
I am looking forward to trying this with my students.

01:07:50
The Cell-Ed.
